Insurance Coverage Built for Performing Arts Nonprofits
Coverage that fits how your group actually works
Our performing arts program covers the real risks your group faces including board disputes, injured volunteers, stolen instruments, and borrowed costumes—not the generic risks a general insurer would assume about you.
Protection for your board
Your board members and executive leadership make difficult decisions every day. D&O coverage protects them personally when those decisions result in claims.
- Claims against your board for decisions that allegedly caused financial harm to someone
- Optional Employment Practices Liability add-on: protection if astaff member or volunteer sues for wrongful termination or discrimination
- Disputes with members, donors, or funders
- Claims that the board mishandled funds or didn’t meet its responsibilities
- Protection for Legal defense costs even when the claim turns out to be baseless
Essential for any nonprofit with a volunteer board
If someone gets hurt or property gets damaged at your event
When your group performs at venues, parks, festivals, and community spaces accidents happen. General Liability protects your organization from claims that may arise when an audience member is injured or property is damaged at your event.
- Injuries to audience members, guests, and volunteers
- Property damage to a venue you’ve rented or borrowed
- Claims that come up after a show ends, like an audience member who reports an injury weeks later
- Defense costs if a program, poster, or social post lands you in a libel or copyright dispute
- Free certificates that name the venue on your policy. Most parks, schools, and community centers require this before you can perform
Venues often require proof of liability insurance (a COI).
Musical instruments, costumes, props & AV gear
Your instruments, costumes, lights, sound gear, and sets are the tools of your craft. This coverage provides protection for them, wherever they go, from your rehearsal space to the venue and back again.
- From violins to grand pianos, coverage for musical instruments your nonprofit owns
- Sound and lighting gear, whether it’s in transit or set up on stage
- Costumes, props, set pieces, and staging materials
- Protected when stored, transported, or in use during performances
- Theft, accidental damage, or items that simply go missing
Your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover any of this.
If someone gets hurt during a rehearsal or show
When a volunteer twists an ankle in rehearsal or a performer pulls a muscle mid-show, this coverage pays the medical bills. No need to figure out whose fault it was first.
- Pays medical expenses for injured performers and volunteers
- Pays out for injuries no matter whose fault it was — no lawsuits required
- Covers rehearsals, performances, and travel to/from events
- Especially helpful for volunteers without their own health insurance or those who have high deductible medical plans
Takes care of your people without anyone having to sue.
If a volunteer or staff member steals from your organization
Small nonprofits get hit by internal theft more than people realize, and it’s usually a trusted volunteer or staffer handling ticket cash, grant money, or membership dues. This coverage gets your organization’s money back before a single bad actor derails your mission.
- Theft of money or property by a staff member or volunteer
- Forged or altered checks and financial documents
- Cash theft from ticket sales, fundraisers, or dues collection
- Required by many foundation and government grant programs
Often required by grant funders and foundations.
Why It Matters: Claim Stories
Risks Performing Arts Nonprofits Face
These aren’t hypotheticals. They’re the situations our clients have faced, and why the right coverage matters before, not after, something goes wrong.
Board Dispute Over Programming
A member sues the organization after being ousted in a vote over the season’s programming direction. D&O coverage may absorb the legal defense and settlement.
When an Attendee Gets Injured
An audience member trips on a stage cable during a show and breaks her wrist. General Liability covers her medical costs and your legal defense if she files a claim.
Instrument Stolen from Van
Three instruments are stolen overnight when a community orchestra’s van is broken into between shows. Property coverage replaces them so the next performance can go on.
Treasurer Steals Ticket Sales
A volunteer treasurer skims cash from ticket and concession sales before discovery. Crime (Bonding) coverage reimburses the organization for the full loss.
Why Choose a Performing Arts Insurance Specialist
We’re a specialty insurance agency with a deep focus on nonprofits. We don’t write everything. We write the categories we know inside and out, and nonprofits are at the heart of what we do. For your organization, that focus shows up in three places: better coverage, fairer pricing, and agents who understand how a nonprofit actually runs
1
Nonprofit Expertise
We don’t write auto or homeowners policies. We focus on specialty categories we know deeply and nonprofits are at the core of what we do. That means we understand how volunteer-run organization operate, how grant cycles shape your decisions, and how your board really works behind the scenes.
2

You should know what you’re paying for. No hidden fees, no surprise add-ons. We explain every coverage option in plain English before you commit.
5
Small Groups Welcome

Top Questions From Our Performing Arts Nonprofits
We only perform a few times a year. Do we still need year-round coverage?
Yes, and here’s why: your organization still exists between performances. Board meetings, rehearsals, equipment storage, fundraising. All these activities carry risk. Annual policies protect you throughout the year, not just on show nights.
Will our venue require a certificate of insurance?
Almost always. Most parks, schools, community centers, and event venues require a proof of insurance, and they often want their name added to your policy before you can use their space. We can issue certificates same-day and add specific venues whenever you need.
What if our instruments or costumes are damaged?
If you accidentally damage costumes, instruments, or equipment you own, Nonprofit property insurance can usually cover the repair or replacement.
Can we get coverage for a grant application that requires it?
Yes. Many foundations and government grants require D&O, General Liability, or theft protection (sometimes all three) as a funding condition. Tell us what the grant requires and we’ll help you get you the documentation fast.

Best purchased 6-12 months prior to event. Best for: Galas, premieres, benefit concerts, festivals with significant upfront costs.
SINGLE-EVENT LIABILITY INSURANCE
For nonprofits without an annual policy, this gives nonprofit groups coverage for just one event without buying an annual policy. Standalone coverage for one event, doesn’t affect your annual policy’s claims history. Best for: One-off events without an annual policy, or when a venue requires higher limits, or required liquor liability.
