Nonprofit Liability FAQs

Is liability insurance mandatory for nonprofits?

While not required by any law, many funding sources, venues, and contracts mandate that nonprofits carry liability insurance as a condition of engagement.

What factors influence the cost of nonprofit liability insurance?

Premiums are determined by various factors, including the organization’s size, activities, location, number of employees or volunteers, and claims history. High-risk activities or a history of claims may lead to higher premiums.

Can liability insurance cover events hosted by the nonprofit?

Yes, our general liability insurance covers events organized by the nonprofit, protecting against claims of bodily injury or property damage occurring during these events. Also, some venues require proof of insurance, which is provided with the purchase of Liability.

Does liability insurance cover lawsuits related to employment practices?

No. Our general liability policies for nonprofits do not cover employment-related claims such as wrongful termination, discrimination, or harassment.

Are independent contractors covered under a nonprofit’s liability insurance?

Generally, independent contractors are not covered under a nonprofit’s general liability policy. It’s advisable to require contractors to carry their own insurance and name your nonprofit as an additional insured.

How can a nonprofit determine the appropriate amount of liability coverage?

Assessing the right coverage involves evaluating the organization’s activities, assets, and potential risks. Often times, event venues will require a specific limit of insurance.

Does liability insurance cover board members and officers?

No. To protect board members and officers from claims related to their managerial decisions, Directors and Officers (D&O) liability insurance is recommended.
