Insurance FAQs

What is social media liability coverage for PTOs?

Social Media Liability protects your PTO or Booster Club against claims of libel, slander, or invasion of privacy related to posts, emails, or public communication. This includes sharing photos without permission, publishing confidential information, or spreading false statements online or in writing.

Does liability insurance cover volunteers, directors, and members of our PTO?

Yes. Liability Plus coverage extends to officers, members, employees, and volunteers acting on behalf of your PTO during insured activities and events. Coverage also includes guests and participants when combined with Accident Medical Insurance.

Can we add other committees to our insurance?

No. Committees such as grad night committees, and other groups are considered separate legal entities and must have their own policies. Adding them to your PTO, Booster Club, or Foundation insurance shares your liability limits and requires your group to defend them in a lawsuit—which puts your group at risk.

Do vendors and concessionaires need their own insurance for our group or foundation events?

Yes. Vendors are independent contractors and are not covered by your group’s insurance. Any vendor you hire should provide a Certificate of Insurance with a minimum $1 Million limit and list your group as an Additional Insured.

What’s excluded from our PTO, Booster Club, or Education Foundation liability insurance?

Standard exclusions include:

  • Owned vehicles, watercraft, or aircraft
  • Property under your care or owned by the PTA
  • Workers’ Compensation
  • Construction or excavation

A full list of exclusions is included in your policy documents.

What types of financial loss are not covered by Bonding insurance?

Bonding coverage excludes:

  • Losses only proven through inventory or accounting errors
  • Theft from vending machines or use of supermarket scrip
  • Dishonest acts by individuals previously known to be untrustworthy
  • Always review your full policy for complete exclusion details.

Please note this is not an exhaustive list. Always read your policy language for complete details on what is excluded.

Who is covered under D&O insurance for PTOs, Booster Clubs, and Education Foundations?

D&O Liability covers your group as an entity, along with directors, officers, trustees, employees, and volunteers. This policy protects your leadership from claims of wrongful acts, mismanagement, or breach of duty.

What are best practices for keeping PTOs’, Booster Clubs’, and Education Foundations’ funds secure?

Follow these key steps:

  • Require two signatures on checks
  • Never pre-sign checks
  • Audit financials annually and when leadership changes
  • Track all payments and deposits with documentation
  • Review bank statements monthly
  • Avoid making checks out to cash
  • Bonding Insurance provides protection, but good oversight is your first line of defense.
What are tips for running safe events?

Follow these key steps:

  • Inspect the space beforehand
  • Mark off restricted areas
  • Ensure clear entrances, exits, and walkways
  • Maintain a 1:4 volunteer-to-child ratio
  • Have a first aid station and designated emergency contacts
  • Cover exposed wires and clean spills immediately
  • Require vendors to supervise equipment and provide proof of insurance

These practices help reduce the risk of accidents and protect your PTO.
